FIJI participated in the Australian Navy’s 125th Anniversary Celebration in Sydney, Australia last weekend.

Republic of Fiji Navy’s RFNS Timo was part of 30 ships from 19 countries that took part in Exercise Kakadu Fleet Review.

According to the Royal Australian Navy (RAN), the review was the largest gathering of international warships on Sydney Harbour for more than a decade.

The Australian Navy highlighted that the fleet review was one phase of Exercise Kakadu – a major maritime exercise with numerous countries hosted by the Royal Australian Navy every two years.

A fleet review, according to the Royal Australian Navy, is a naval tradition where a reviewing officer on board the reviewing ship inspects the massed ships of the navy, typically when the battle fleet was mobilised for war.

Since the 19th century, fleet reviews have been held for commemorative events and celebrations, including inviting other national navies to participate by sending vessels.

Fiji Navy said RFNS Timo played an active role in the exercise and the International Fleet Review in Sydney.

Fiji Navy highlighted that on the margins of the event, senior navy officers attended an International Maritime Conference, where Commander Navy Fleet, Commander Joseva Tunidau provided a briefing on undersea mining and undersea communications cable in the Pacific.

Chief Fiji Navy, Commodore Timoci Natuva and staff engaged with other naval chiefs, participated in bilateral discussions with leaders of the RAN and regional naval representatives.
