LAST week the Fiji Navy was part of a delegation that visited New Zealand to engage with the Maritime Security Oversight Committee (MSOC).
The delegation was led by the Defence permanent secretary, Mason Smith.
The visit was to build on the partnership established during the committee’s visit to Fiji earlier this year.
The Fiji Navy in a statement said the exchange focused on understanding New Zealand’s journey in designing, drafting, and implement their Maritime Security Strategy.
The exchange also looked at valuable insights, particularly around risk assessment methodologies, comprehensive multiagency cooperation, leveraging emerging threats and risks as Fiji continue to mature in its maritime security governance frameworks to empower and enable operations at sea, the Vuvale Maritime Essential Services Centre and with key partners.
Fiji Navy said the Chief of Fiji Navy had an opportunity to have bilateral talks with New Zealand’s Chief of Navy during the visit and discussed ways to enhance cooperation amongst the two navies.
The Fiji Navy thanked the various maritime agencies of New Zealand for their support during the visit.
The visit, according to Fiji Navy was supported by the Government of the United Kingdom through the British High Commission in Fiji and the UNDP as part of its broader commitment to strengthening maritime security and safety in the Pacific.
The UK continues to work closely with Fiji and regional partners to enhance national coordination and reinforce shared efforts that keep Pacific waters safe and resilient.
