FIJI’S ability to respond to threats at sea has been strengthened with Parliament’s passing of the Maritime Powers Bill 2026 last week.
The Bill establishes a comprehensive legislative framework governing the exercise of maritime powers by authorised officers in Fiji’s maritime zones.
According to Parliament, the legislation consolidates and modernises legal powers relating to the boarding, searching, detention and movement of vessels, persons and goods.
It also provides a clear legal basis for enforcing Fiji’s maritime laws and fulfilling its international obligations.
The Republic of Fiji Navy (RFN) said the passing of the Bill was an important step in strengthening Fiji’s response to threats at sea.
“It provides a clearer legal framework for authorised officers to board and search vessels, seize evidence, and act against suspected maritime offences,” RFN said.
The Navy said the next step was turning the framework into coordinated and lawful action to protect Fiji’s waters and communities.
