A cutting-edge research vessel, the Argo, is at the centre of a major ocean expedition currently underway in Fiji.

Operated by National Geographic’s Pristine Seas program, the 129-foot vessel is serving as a mobile base for a five-month research and filmmaking mission aimed at supporting Fiji’s national ocean conservation goals.

Equipped with state-of-the-art technology including submersibles, remote-operated vehicles, and live-streaming capabilities, the Argo is home to a team of local and international scientists studying the health of Fiji’s marine ecosystems.

The mission is being conducted in partnership with Blue Prosperity Fiji, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs, and the Ministry of Fisheries and Forests.

The expedition supports Fiji’s commitment to sustainably manage 100 per cent of its ocean space and designate 30 per cent as fully protected by 2030.

Findings from the research will be shared with the Fijian Government and contribute to scientific papers informing marine protection policies.

In collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Pristine Seas is also rolling out an ocean literacy program for schools and communities.

Two documentary films will be produced—one spotlighting local marine stewardship, and another focused on Rotuma’s marine environment.
