Do not turn a blind eye to domestic violence.

With increasing cases of violence against women and children, Assistant Minister for Women Sashi Kiran has pleaded with all Fijians to report such matters to the police.

She pleaded with all families at yesterday’s International Women’s Day celebration in Labasa, Vanua Levu to respect and protect their mothers, sisters and daughters.

“That woman who is a victim is a mother, a daughter and a sister so let’s work together to end domestic violence,” Ms Kiran said.

“If you see domestic violence in your neighbourhood, report it to the police. Don’t turn away and say it’s not your business. Let’s stop domestic violence and make it our business to report the matter.”

Sadly, Ms Kiran said some people have classified domestic violence as not their business and shouldn’t get involved.

“It has been very common in Fiji that when we see a case of domestic violence, we tell others that it’s not our business and we do nothing about it,” Ms Kiran said.

“Let’s stop that attitude. We need to protect our women, our sisters, mothers and daughters in society from domestic violence.

“The Government is very committed to reduce violence so we are working with many partners with policy implementation on this issue.”

Ms Kiran said that through the ministry’s social pages, her team was committed to reach out and serve the needs of women.
