Opposition MP Rinesh Sharma says the prevention of suicide requires the implementation of more effective and proactive measures, and the support of the community.

He told Parliament last week the ingestion of pesticides, hangings and firearms were the most common methods of suicide globally, “which is why paraquat has been banned in Fiji”.

He said suicide was shrouded in stigma, shame and misunderstanding.

“This means people do not often ask or seek adequate help. The prevention of suicide cannot be accomplished by one person, organisation or institution. It requires the support of the whole community,” Mr Sharma said.

“Restrict and monitor the sale and usage of fertilisers and pesticides, which could be used in attempts to commit suicide.

“We need to restrict net[1]works that are fuelling drug usage, social media bullying and threats.”

Mr Sharma said laws penalising those who bully, harass and threaten others on social media were also needed.

“Recently, there was a matter that went viral on social media in which a TikToker killed himself because he was being bullied on social media.

“In fact, what I see on TikTok are people threatening each other, giving their addresses and saying, ‘I am at this address, come and fight with me’.

“It is quite surprising that people do these things and children have access to this kind of content in Fiji.”

Mr Sharma said there was a need for reinforcing protective factors by providing social support to vulnerable individuals, follow-up care, fighting the stigma and sup[1]porting those impacted by suicide.

“Hopefully, the honourable Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance can consider this in the next budget.”
