Opposition MP Rinesh Sharma has called for the suspension of a contractor working for the Fiji Corrections Service (FCS), following concerns raised by residents of Naqiliso Settlement.
In a statement posted on social media, Mr Sharma thanked the Assistant Minister for Health for accommodating a visit to the settlement, and also acknowledged the media and authorities for what he described as swift intervention.
Residents there had raised alarm in the weekend after development works by FCS contractors blocked a drain that resulted in flooding in the settlement.
Sharma said constructive engagement had helped bring attention to the issue.
“Dialogue and debate led to action. I understand that there are endless issues, but there is always hope to act on them for the people of Fiji,” he said.
Mr Sharma said he raised the matter again during the opening of Parliament earlier today, informing the Acting Attorney-General about the alleged conduct of the contractor towards residents.
“During the opening of Parliament today, I informed the Acting Attorney-General about the behavior of the contractor toward the residents,” he said.
According to Mr Sharma, residents were told by the contractor that part of their homes and a place of prayer would be demolished, a claim he described as unacceptable.
“The contractor has told the residents that part of their household and prayer place shall be demolished,” he said.
Mr Sharma called for immediate action, urging authorities to suspend the contractor.
“I call for the suspension of this contractor, who is working for the Fiji Corrections Service. Learn some humility first,” he said.
The situation at Naqiliso Settlement has drawn public attention in recent days, with residents raising concerns about flooding and the impact of nearby works on their community.
