Cadet training is a tool for instilling self-discipline, moral values, integrity and respect for others. It further helps students to value team work and learn to obey instruction.

This was highlighted to the 445 students of Suva Grammar School who participated in the school’s first cadet passing-out parade last week at Albert Park in Suva.

The cadets, who are the pioneers of the school’s military training program, learned about leadership, discipline, teamwork and overcoming challenges during weeks of intense military drill training.

From listening attentively to instructions to working in unison to complete barrack week, these students showcased a great sense of responsibility towards the program.

Chief guest at the event, Education Assistant Minister, Iliesa Vanawalu said he was pleased that training was provided to students and that it would strengthen the students’ character and make them more responsible.

Mr Vanawalu said the introduction of the military drills in schools further develops students , instills discipline, patriotism, encourages physical activity and promotes fitness.

“In the face of the challenges surrounding our youngsters now, cadet training could be the answer,” he said.

“Cadet training should not be seen as only a physical drill. In fact, it teaches students important values such as honesty, discipline and a sense of responsibility.

“It further helps students to value team work and learn to obey instructions. The purpose of cadet training is to develop character and leadership skills and impart a sense of duty and responsibility in the cadet.”

He said the cadet training program would definitely complement the school’s plans to use the program to encourage good discipline in students and also help with the school’s achievements in sports and academic standards.

Parents, teachers, old scholars and guardians turned up in numbers to support the SGS cadets.
