Severe thunderstorm with rain warning issued for parts of Fiji

A severe thunderstorm warning for heavy rainfall is now in force for parts of Fiji, with authorities urging the public to take immediate precautions.

The National Weather Forecasting Centre in Nadi issued the warning at 2pm today, covering the interior and southern parts of Viti Levu — from Sigatoka through the Coral Coast to Navua — as well as the southern areas of Vanua Levu, including southern Bua and Cakaudrove.

Forecasters say daytime heating has triggered thunderstorm activity over inland areas of the two main islands.

These thunderstorms are expected to intensify, drift southwards and impact southern districts.

Severe thunderstorms may bring intense heavy rainfall, which could lead to flash flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas within the next few hours.

Frequent and dangerous lightning strikes are also expected.

Members of the public are advised to avoid flooded creeks and drains and not to walk, cycle or drive through floodwaters.

Electrical appliances and computers should be unplugged if lightning is observed or thunder is heard.

People caught outdoors during lightning activity are urged to minimise their body height and move quickly to safe shelter such as a building.

Authorities warn against sheltering under trees and advise residents to remain indoors, away from windows, and to keep children inside.

Thunderstorm activity with heavy rainfall and lightning is expected to continue until late afternoon or evening.

However, due to the unpredictable nature of thunderstorms, not all areas may be affected and impacts may vary.
