A severe thunderstorm warning is now in force for the northern half of Viti Levu, from Nadi through Rakiraki to Korovou, and the eastern half of Vanua Levu, covering areas from northern Bua through Labasa to Udu Point, as well as Wailevu through Savusavu to Saqani, including Natewa.
Authorities say daytime heating has triggered the development of thunderstorm cells over the interiors of Viti Levu and Vanua Levu.
These systems are expected to drift northward and northeastward this afternoon and may intensify into severe thunderstorms.
Forecasters warn that the storms could bring intense rainfall and frequent, dangerous lightning strikes. Heavy downpours may lead to flash flooding in low-lying areas over the next few hours.
Members of the public are being advised to exercise extreme caution.
People are urged to stay clear of flooded creeks and drains, and not to walk, cycle or drive through floodwaters. With lightning activity expected, residents are also advised to unplug electrical appliances and computers where possible.
Those caught outdoors during lightning are advised to minimise body height and move quickly to a safe shelter such as a building or house, while avoiding sheltering under trees.
Parents are urged to keep children indoors, stay away from windows and remain alert to changing weather conditions.
Thunderstorm activity accompanied by heavy rainfall and lightning is expected to continue into the late afternoon or evening.
