The revival of the Tara’s Supermarket Nausori Sevens has brought new life to grassroots rugby, marking its return after a 15-year lapse.
Tournament director Malakai Yamaivava said the reintroduction of the competition was driven by a desire to reconnect communities and inspire young players.
“We are very thankful to bring back the sevens this year with the support of our sponsors and new committee,” he said.
The two-day tournament attracted 56 teams, including 32 men’s, 16 under-21 and eight women’s sides, with participants travelling from across the country, including maritime and northern regions.
Mr Yamaivava said the focus was intentionally placed on grassroots teams to give emerging players a platform to showcase their talent.
“The aim is to motivate our young players and help them work towards national selection, adding that the club previously produced regular national representative,” he said
Proceeds from the tournament will support a community project in partnership with the Nausori Methodist Church, including the construction of a walkway to improve public access.
“This year our project in partnership with our community, we will be doing a walkway from our Methodist Church Hall to the public amenity right at the back of the hall, and we are happy to be part of our community work,” he added.
Despite challenges such as limited preparation time and securing sponsorship, organisers managed to deliver a successful event.
With strong participation and community backing, the return of the Sevens is expected to play a key role in rebuilding pathways for future rugby stars.
