Leader of Opposition Inia Seruiratu has urged State leaders in  California to protect the rights and dignity of Fijian caregivers and other immigrant families.

In a statement, he said this could be done by offering Fijian caregivers pathways to citizenship and relief for individuals with unauthorized immigration status, supporting local efforts to protect immigrant families and promote a culture of understanding and inclusion.

His call follows American President Donald Trump’s decision to deport those living illegally in USA without any proper papers.

“We stand in solidarity with Fijian caregivers and other immigrant families in California, and we will continue to advocate for policies that uphold the values of compassion, justice, and equality for all,” he said.

“The recent escalation of immigration enforcement by the Trump Administration has created a state of fear and uncertainty for many former Fiji residents and the meaningless rhetoric from misinformed commentators has made the situation worse.

“As caregivers, these individuals have dedicated themselves to providing vital support and care to families in California, including vulnerable seniors, and individuals with disabilities. They have made significant contributions to the economic and social fabric of the state, and their presence is a testament to the strength and resilience of immigrant communities.”

Mr Seruiratu said the Federal Administration’s crackdown on unauthorized immigration has put Fijian caregivers at risk of deportation.

“We recognize that many Fijian caregivers have been working in the state for years, building relationships with their employers and patients, and have become an integral part of the care system,” he said.

“We strongly advocate for a humane and compassionate approach to immigration enforcement that prioritizes the safety and well-being of all individuals, regardless of their immigration status.”

He acknowledged the tremendous contribution our caregiver community in California have made towards their families at home including the national economy.
