The Serua under-20 team have booked its place in the Vodafone Vanua Challenge finals after crushing Cakaudrove 29-11 in their semi-final match yesterday at the Buckhurst Park in Laucala Bay, Suva.
Both teams were intent on playing free following rugby to the delights of their fans. Caucakdrove drew first blood in the opening minutes, but Serua found their rhythm towards midway through the half scoring two consecutive tries.
Cakaudrove came out firing in the second with a penalty, but Serua dominated the rest of the game scoring 15 unanswered points scoring two tries and a penalty.
Despite the impressive win, Serua captain Rafaele Dagaga said that his team needed to improve on their discipline and set piece if they are to lift the 2025 Under 20 Vodafone Vanua Challenge.
“A lot of high tackles, a lot of weakness especially our scrums and lineouts, we will go and work on these aspects of our game before the final next week.”
Captain Dagaga and over a dozen of players in the team are currently enrolled at Nasinu Secondary School and they were part of the U18 team that lost in the Super Deans final to Ratu Kadavulevu School earlier this year.
Dagaga said the provincial competition is a more challenging than age group rugby.
“In the Deans we were playing against our age group, but here in the provincial level there are no age group rugby. Its more challenging and I thank the boys for giving their all during the competition.”
In the second semi-final, Taveuni edged Northland 17-12.
