Who would have thought that something as simple as selling ice blocks would generate enough income to pay utility bills and put food on the table.

Litiana Vakamelei Qalobula ventured into the business to support her husband who is a farmer and found it quite lucrative.

She said when their farm business was hampered because of lack of transport, she turned to making and selling ice blocks.

“It is really difficult to find affordable transport from Naqaraivi to the Sawani containment border, so I decided to make ice blocks to bring in some money to meet our needs,” the Qalikarua, Matuku, woman said.

“With this new business I was able to pay for our electricity, buy kerosene and also buy food for us.

“I also have a canteen but it is closed at the moment because it is very hard to get stock.

“I am waiting for the border to open so I can re-stock it and reopen the canteen.

“The ice block business brings in about $20 a day and that little profit is helping us survive the pandemic.”
