The 2025 Vodafone Vanua Cup Championship was officially launched yesterday, promising another exciting season of grassroots rugby with 16 provincial teams set to compete across three pools.
The Vanua Cup, Fiji Rugby Union’s second-tier provincial competition, continues to play a critical role in nurturing young talent and providing a pathway into the Skipper Cup, the nation’s premier rugby championship.
Speaking at the launch, the importance of the competition was highlighted. “The Vodafone Vanua Championship, although a second-tier provincial rugby union championship, is highly anticipated by rugby fans like us.
“The championship serves as an important platform for developing grassroots talent and provides a pathway for players to advance to Fiji’s top-tier league,” Nilesh Singh, Vodafone’s head of recharge and distribution said.
Last year, the Vanua Championship featured 700 registered senior players and 620 in the U20 division. Organisers expect those numbers to grow in 2025, reflecting the continued expansion of the sport.
The tournament is not only seen as an opportunity to discover Fiji’s next rugby stars but also as a cornerstone of community development. “This tournament provides an ideal platform for young players to thrive, showcasing the passion for rugby found across the islands,” Singh added.
Acknowledging the crucial role of sponsors, it was noted: “Vodafone’s support helps lay a solid foundation, and who knows, the next great rugby star could be discovered in one of these matches.”
The championship kicks off later this month, with fans eagerly awaiting another season of fierce competition and emerging talent.
Meanwhile, the Royal Tea Ranadi competition was also launched yesterday
