Search efforts continued yesterday for a 65-year-old man believed to have drowned in the Northern Division.

And in a separate incident, police said the body of a five-year-old foreign national was recovered in Sigatoka as heavy rain and flooding continued to affect parts of the country.

The first incident was reported at Cogea Village on Monday afternoon, where the elderly man was swept away by strong currents while attempting to cross a swollen river near his village.

Villagers’ search efforts provided futile and police were unable to reach the village due to flooded roads and river crossings.

As for the child who went missing near the Biausevu waterfall, police said Sigatoka Forensics and Criminal Investigations Department (CID) personnel had uplifted the victim’s body and transported it to the Sigatoka Hospital mortuary.

The Fiji Meteorological Service issued weather bulletins earlier this week warning of heavy rain and flooding for most of the Fiji Group.

Yesterday police urged members of the public to take weather warnings seriously, and said advisories were issued for everyone’s safety.

“Warnings are issued for everyone’s safety and must be taken seriously.”

“Parents and guardians are reminded to always monitor their children’s whereabouts.

“Do not attempt to cross flooded roads, crossings, or swim across swollen rivers.

“Please cooperate with authorities by adhering to safety advisories.”
