The Ministry of Agriculture, Waterways and Environment is currently constructing the largest concrete sea wall on Bau Island.

Speaking in Parliament yesterday, Minister for Agriculture, Waterways and Environment Mahendra Reddy said they were constructing the 624 metres long sea wall.

“We have been trying to construct this sea wall for the past three years, but because it requires a lot of mobilisation, it’s an island and rural cost involved, we were not able to get a particular, any contractor,” he said.

“So finally we have got one. We’ve mobilised the machines already, and the work is being currently undertaken.”

He said because of the nature of the area, they could not undertake a nature-based sea wall construction.

“There’s no material on that island. The island is very small, so we have to undertake a concrete sea wall construction.”
