SEVEN Pacific islanders who are successful recipients of Masters and Doctorate Scholarships under the SDGs Global Leadership Program and Human Resources Development in the Mining Sector (KIZUNA Program), which is implemented by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) were farewelled by the Ambassador of Japan to Fiji, Masahiro Omura yesterday.
While farewelling the scholarship recipients, Mr Omura said SDGs Global Leaders Program and the Human Resources Development in the Mining Sector are part of the Government of Japan’s continuous effort to support the development of human resources of Pacific Island countries.
“During the PALM 8 meeting in May 2018, Prime Minister Abe reiterated Japan’s commitment to providing human resource development to the Pacific,” Mr Omura said.
“This commitment draws upon Japan’s unique strengths to assist a resilient, sustainable and self-sufficient development in the Pacific,” he said.
“The overall objective of the SDGs Global Leaders Program is to strengthen your capacity within Government and your organization in formulating and implementing policies to enhance socio-economic development.
“The program will offer a range of opportunities that will enable you to further develop your knowledge and skills and I hope that you will make full use of these opportunities. In some instances, you may be invited to be part of some networking events, attend Japanese language classes and engage in an internship program.”
Meanwhile the delegation includes five Fijian government officials, one private sector and one Kiribati government official.
The five awardees are under SDGs Global Leadership Program and two recipients in Mining Sector are awarded Master and Doctorate scholarship each under the Human Resources Development in the Mining Sector (KIZUNA Program).
