Schools basketball tourney heats up

Secondary schools continued to battle it out during the Vodafone Fiji Secondary Schools Basketball Championship yesterday.

The championship began on Thursday, and sees 58 teams from 25 schools competing at three different venues.

These are the Vodafone Arena Hall A, Yat Sen Hall and the FMF Gymnasium.

Yesterday, various results indicating the tough competition on offer were reported at various venues.

At the FMF Gymnasium for the under-19 grade’s boys and girls competitions, Suva Grammar School won 39-3 over the Ba Provincial Freebird Institute.

For the under-15 grade at Vodafone Arena’s Hall A, Church College of Fiji defeated International School Suva 17-5 in the girls division.

At the Yat Sen Hall in Flagstaff for the under-17 grade, Church College of Fiji beat Magodro Secondary School 34-6.

Magodro is competing in the tournament for the first time and according to their coach, Isikeli Natanu, he said most of the players had taken up the sport for the first time.

Meanwhile, at the Vodafone Arena, Ba Provincial Freebird Institute’s under-15 team battled it out against Suva Grammar School, which featured Coca-Cola Games record-breaking high jumper John Vugakoto.

The competition ends today.

U19 at FMF Gymnasium – JWC v ISS (girls): 29-24, ACS v YSS (girls): 29-13, SGS v SJSS (girls): 13-15, GHS v SVC (girls): 13-19, SGS v Ba Pro (girls): 39-3, MBHS 2 v JWCC (boys): 6-18.

U17 at Yat Sen Hall – SGS v YSS (girls): 16-28, SJSS v CCF (girls): 7-20, SVC v QVS (boys): 29-10, SHC v Tilak (boys): 11-36, LMS v ISN (boys): 8-28, QVS v ISS (boys): 12-18, Magodro v CCF (boys): 6-34.

U15 at Vodafone Arena Hall A – SJSS v ISS (girls): 9-16, SGS v YSS (girls): 24-14, SHC v YSS (boys): 11-26, ISS v MBHS (boys): 15-17, ISS v CCF (girls): 5-17.
