A school in Lautoka is racing against time to carry out minor repair works ahead of the annual termite swarming season between September and November.

Drasa Secondary School principal Pushp Sharma said several parts of the school had already been infested by termites, including vocational rooms, storage spaces, and key learning areas.

“The VTC1 room, the vocational rooms, the other side, and the new room that was built, the skirting and that part, have been infected by termites,” he said.

“The wall between VTC1 and VTC2 was also infected. We called Biosecurity, they sprayed, and after three months they normally come and check.”

Mr Sharma said termites had infested a storage room, the home economics room, cupboards, a science lab, and trees within the school compound.

“Branches used to fall on the walkway. We cut down all the infected trees.

“In block B, block C and one of the rooms, we changed the bottom plates because it was completely rotten.”

He confirmed the school was using its free education grant to fund the works.

“We haven’t repaired much, just patches with whatever materials were available at the school,” he said.

“Whenever there are signs of termites, we just call Biosecurity. They’re fast.”
