Balata College in Tavua recorded a 100 per cent pass rate in the Year 13 Certificate Exam in 2025.

It was among a number of rural schools recognised by the Ministry of Education for achieving the milestone.

School principal Umendran Reddy said they were very proud of their students for achieving a goal set by the school academic team years ago.

“This is a testament to the hard work of the students, the parents and guardians and not forgetting the teachers who spent countless hours teaching, supervising and studying with the student’s, months before they sat for their exams,” said Mr Reddy.

“Our teachers would spend afternoons supervising and studying with our students while they also spent Saturday classes revising and preparing for the exams.”

Mr Reddy also acknowledged the Ministry of Education’s support in their efforts.

“I want to thank the ministry for always answering our calls for assistance and for encouraging to improve our academic performance every year.”

The vice principal, Sudeshna Kumar, who was responsible for the school’s academic programs, said one of her goals was to achieve a 100 per cent pass rate in their external exams.

“I’ve been with the school for the past eight years and since I came I have been wanting us to get to this level,” said Mrs Kumar.

“We came close in past years and in 2020 we had a 98 per cent pass rate. From that time onwards we had been working tirelessly to achieve this milestone.

“We are very happy that we finally did it.”
