SBW, more than a star

Sonny Bill Williams is a multi-talented sports personality.

He also seems to possess the innate ability to be at the right place at the right time.

In rugby league, he won the NRL final, in rugby union he won Super Rugby with the Waikato Chiefs. Twice he was World Cup champion with the All Blacks.

A good professional boxer and lately in his first taste of World Rugby 7s, he claimed the Wellington title on home turf.

It’s like the guy’s professional career was properly calculated and he seems to cherish the challenges and risks that accompany it.

Sonny Bill Williams, apart from been a sporting superstar, is also a down-to-earth gentleman.

In last year’s World Cup, he gave his winner’s medal to an adoring fan, and $100,000 of boxing purse to the Christchurch earthquake appeal.

Apart from other giveaways, in last weekend’s Wellington 7s, he gave boots and tickets to a single mother of five. Some give privately while others show it publicly. A well-known public personality like SBW has to express himself openly. Because if you’re that good on centre stage, there must be something special about you as a human being.
