Sangam football shines despite heavy rain

HEAVY rain in Ba on Thursday could not stop the excitement and energy as football teams took the field for Day One of the 96th TISI Sangam Convention.

While the wet weather created a few challenges, all scheduled matches were completed, thanks to the hard work of the organising committee.

Games Committee chairman Upendra Gounder said weather was the main concern on the opening day.

“The biggest challenge for us right now is the weather. We’ve ruled out one ground because of the wet condition, it’s unplayable.

“We are now looking for a substitute venue and will ensure referees and medical teams are provided. Otherwise, Day One games went smoothly, and we managed to complete all matches,” Gounder said.

Despite the slippery conditions on day one, teams gave their best on the field. North America TIV and Victoria TIV played out a 1-1 draw in a close contest. Middlemore TIV was in top form as they hammered Vatiyaka TIV 8-0, while Varoko TIV comfortably defeated Waitakere TIV 4-0. Raviravi/Tavarau TIV also impressed with a 4-0 win over Nalovo.

Hamilton TIV dominated their match against Sydney TIV, winning 6-0. In the Masters division, Malolo Masters defeated Nadroga Masters 4-0.

Day Two began with the first official match after the opening ceremony, where defending champions Nadi TIV made a strong statement with a 2-0 win over Valley TIV. The victory sets the tone for their campaign as they aim to retain their title.

Other sports, including netball and volleyball kicks off today, adding more excitement and color to the annual Sangam Convention.

The tournament culminates on Monday.
