IN a nutshell, the word Sangam embodies the spirit of coming together in unity and purpose, says TISI Sangam president Parveen Kumar.

Speaking at the 95th Annual Sangam Convention at Prince Charles Park in Nadi yesterday, Mr Kumar said it was a principle cherished by the first generation of indentured labourers who travelled from South India to Fiji.

“The history of Sangam intertwines with Australia, as evidenced by the pivotal role Australian companies played in Fiji’s early development,” he said.

“While acknowledging this shared history, we also recognise the hardships endured by indentured labourers in those days.

“Nadi holds a special place in our hearts as a significant cultural hub for all Fijians. It was here on May 24, 1926, that the foundation of the Then India Sanmarga Ikya Sangam was laid, marking the beginning of a remarkable journey. I also extend a special acknowledgement to our Sangam members from Canada, New Zealand, Australia, USA and beyond.

“Your continued connection with Fiji underscores the global reach and significance of Sangam, transforming it into an international entity.”

Mr Kumar also acknowledged the presence of the Australian High Commissioner, Ewen McDonald, and his wife on accepting their invitation to inaugurate the 95th Sangam convention.
