A basic understanding of the game and mastering formations are two things head coach Jerry Sam wants to see in the various futsal trials that his team will be carrying out this month.

The national futsal head coach conducted the first round of trials over the weekend, solely focusing on Southern Zone players.

This weekend he will be headed to the Western Division for his assessment before heading for Labasa next week.

In these trials, Sam will be eyeing the players he sees suitable to join the first-ever Fiji Futsal women’s side set to take part at the OFC Futsal Women’s Nations Cup which is also serving as a world cup qualifier.

“Basically, what I want to see is whether these girls will understand the game and the formation. I’ve worked with these southern futsal players before, I’ve taught them the system to play so there is no excuse for them to say that they don’t understand, they should know what I’m trying to establish,” he said.

Sam is also racing against time with the qualifier scheduled for August.

“I think if all these players turn up, Fiji already has a group of players that we can select from, so that’s good.

“Futsal is a small-sided game that we can just train for four weeks or so where we can emphasise on some of the technical areas and game plans that the players need to understand, and we should be good,” Sam added.

On Saturday and Sunday, Sam will be conducting trials at the futsal court in Ba for Western-based players.

He will be in Labasa on May 25-26.
