Sally tops group in table tennis

OLYMPIAN Sally Yee showed impressive performance in her individual event during the table tennis competition in the 2017 Pacific Mini Games at the Korman Stadium indoor hall one in Port Vila, Vanuatu.

She defeated New Caledonia 3-1 and leads group B with six points while her sister Grace Yee leads group A with six points after a 3-0 win over Solomon Islands and 3-1 victory over Vanuatu.

Fiji Table Tennis Association president Anthony Ho said he was pleased with the performance of the players.

“We played well in the team’s competition as it is not easy. Host Vanuatu got a very good team from the past and they have number one players in men and women’s competitions in the Pacific,” Ho said.

“In the women’s competition though Grace is a good player but she was playing against some of the veteran players and we do not have the experience like Vanuatu and obliviously they won the gold medal in the team event.”

Mere Roden qualified for the final in the women’s para table tennis after her opponent from Solomon Islands did not turn up for the match.

“I waited for 10 minutes before they declared me a winner and I advanced through to the final stage to compete for the gold medal against Fiji’s Akanisi Latu,” Roden said.

The gold medal match between Latu and Roden was in progress when this edition went into the press.
