THE sacrifices, hard work and dedication of Swire Shipping Fijian Drua flanker Kitione Salawa were recognised on Tuesday night when he walked away with the two biggest men’s awards at the club’s annual awards ceremony held at the Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa.
The powerful loose forward from Namotomoto, Nadi claimed the Enore Players’ Player of the Year Award and the prestigious McDonald’s Fiji Men’s Player of the Year Award, capping off what has been an outstanding season in Drua colours.
For Salawa, the achievement was the culmination of years of commitment and perseverance.
“Firstly, I want to thank God for the talent and strength that I was able to play with this season,” Salawa said.
“I also thank my wife and children for their support towards me during this season.
“I have been waiting for this award for a long time and I’m happy to receive it.”
The Enore Players’ Player of the Year Award carries special significance as it is voted by fellow teammates after every match throughout the season. It reflects the respect and admiration Salawa has earned from those who share the field and dressing room with him.
His second accolade, the McDonald’s Fiji Men’s Player of the Year Award, is selected by the men’s head coach and is regarded as the highest individual honour within the team.
Salawa’s performances throughout the season made him a deserving recipient. Week after week, he led from the front with his relentless work rate, physicality and consistency. Whether carrying the ball into heavy traffic, making crucial tackles or competing fiercely at the breakdown, the 25-year-old became one of the Drua’s most dependable performers.
His commitment has also earned the praise of coaches, management, sponsors and supporters who have watched him grow into one of the club’s key leaders.
From the rugby fields of Namotomoto to becoming one of the standout stars of the Drua, Salawa’s journey is a testament to perseverance, humility and hard work.
While the awards celebrate his achievements this season, Salawa remains grounded, choosing instead to share the honour with those who have supported him throughout his journey.
