Sailors vying to represent the country at the Pacific Games in the Solomon Islands later this year will begin the fight for places this weekend.
In a statement, the Fiji Yachting Association announced the Fiji National Sailing Regatta 2023 would begin on Saturday, July 8 and end on Sunday, July 9 at the National Sailing Centre in Laucala Bay, Suva.
Fiji Yachting Association president Shayne Brodie said the nationals were highly anticipated and brought sailing enthusiasts, athletes, and spectators from around Fiji and New Zealand together.
Brodie said it was the annual regatta for the optimist and laser class of sailboats, and now the windsurfing fleet, which was one of three mandatory regattas Pacific Games sailing hopefuls would have to compete in to secure a place in the sailing squad for the national team.
“We have sailors travelling from as far as Savusavu and Vuda Sailing Clubs,” he said.
“We have sailors from the age of eight to 40 years old, with skill levels from novice to seasoned sailors.
“It will be a very exciting weekend of racing.”
