Fiji Judo Federation (FJF) has stepped forward to help curb the increase of abuse, rape and discrimination of children, girls and women.
FJF has started the year by inviting members of the public, especially women and children to join the sport to learn judo and especially the basics of self defence.
Federation development director Simione Kuruvoli Sr said plans were in place to use the sport to help people in their safety, develop their sporting talents and help them keep fit and healthy.
“We started last year and we are inviting members of the public to join us to keep fit and safe,” Kuruvoli Sr said. “Our sessions are free, so parents bring your children.
We have tournaments and we are focusing on hosting more competitions.
“Majority of our judokas are primary school students, so we are planning to ask the Ministry of Education to allow judo in school because this is a way children can defend themselves if they face unwarranted situations.”
Kuruvoli started the free clinics at the South Pacific Judo Centre beside Nabua Primary School in Nabua, Suva, yesterday.
