The vanua o Betoraurau was filled with jubilation yesterday as they celebrated the installation of their new chief, Ratu Viliame Mataitoga in Nadi.
Ratu Viliame, 39, was officially installed as the new Tui Sabeto, succeeding the late Ratu Tevita Susu Mataitoga.
During the installation church service, the Reverend Iliapi Tiwai reminded Ratu Viliame of the importance of relying on God’s wisdom and protection in leadership.
Drawing inspiration from the biblical account of King David, Mr Tiwai emphasised the significance of fulfilling duties by the wishes of God.
“Always remember how King David led his people,” he said.
“He didn’t rely on his own understanding but trust in God. As he always said, ‘The Lord is my shepherd.”
The installation ceremony drew an emotional crowd, with hundreds flocking to Sabeto to witness the historic event.
The appointment of a new leader brought great relief to the people, providing them with someone to trust for guidance.
In response to his spiritual installation and seeking divine intervention, Ratu Viliame expressed pride in leading his people.
“I have faith and I’m excited with a humble heart to lead, so help me God,” he said.
“I pray to Jehovah God to be our king and saviour and to give me the strength, anoint me with His blessings which will enable me to carry out my duties. Every decision I make, I will have to honour the Lord and seek His guidance every step of the way.”
