SEVENS players in the country have rugby skills but lack in the tactics of the game.
Vodafone National Sevens coach Ben Ryan said during an interview in Labasa that local players still lacked a lot in tackle, passing techniques and the ability to make decisions at breakdowns.
Ryan said among other things players needed to improve the technical element of their game.
“Defensively their shape is a little bit more individualistic which needs to be changed to a concerted effort,” he said.
“These are some of the problems that I identified with local teams when I started off as coach of the national side.
“I have seen a change now with the players in the mainland and their team defence tactics because it is more of team effort now.”
Ryan said it was prime time for Fiji to have its own professional sevens series.
“I would be very proud if one of these wealthy players could take the initiative to divert some funding into the formation of such a professional series,” he said.
“Imagine if we could have local tournaments in the country televised around the globe.
“The spin offs that such an event would get is huge, from providing employment to the unemployed to bringing in tourists and boosting investment in the country.”
Ryan said there had been vast improvement in the games of 7s played in clubs around the country and that it was high time these talents were exposed and brought to the fore.
