Rugby stars help for Fijiana fifteens team

THREE former Flying Fijians are now working together to help the Fijiana XV side as they prepare to take on Papua New Guinea on November 5 in a bid to make the Women’s Rugby World Cup.

Seremaia Bai, Alivereti Doviverata and Saula Radidi together with former Suva rep Ben Soso and former Tailevu rugby player Vueti Tupou have been helping the Fijiana team who are still without a coach.

With less than three weeks to go before the Fijiana faces PNG at the ANZ Stadium in Suva, Bai who now heads the Fiji Rugby Academy said he was asked by women’s development officer Vela Naucukidi to assist in the preparation of women who play the full code.

“I was asked to come and assist the team as we try to make the Women’s Rugby World Cup next year so I brought in Doviverata, Saula, Ben Soso and Vueti so that we could help these players,” Bai said.

Bai, who recently hung his boots after helping Fiji win the Pacific Nations Cup this year, said most of the women were new to the full code or with at least two to three years of experience.

“Most of these players are yet to understand their roles in breakdowns and what they need to do in terms of their positions. The most important thing that we need to see from here is that the players understand their role and how they need to play their game not only technically but also tactical in any given game situation,” Bai added.

The winner from the November 5 game will go on to a repecharge game with Hong Kong and Japan to be hosted by Hong Kong in December.
