RUGBY has shaped the lives of many players that play either 7s or rugby union and the sport is working its magic at Nausori, Nalawa in Ra.
Supercool-sponsored Vatukoro under-19 team is a testament to that with their players displaying discipline both on and off the field.
“We’ve seen a lot of changes since we engaged these boys in sevens rugby,” coach Ilai Nameke shared.
The team was formed earlier this year as an U20 side and competed at last weekend’s Wairiki 7s tournament in Taveuni.
“These boys are disciplined off the field, they shy away from illegal activities that would get them in the wrong hands of the law so it has been fruitful,” he added.
After Wairiki, coach Nameke recruited players below the age of 19 to test them out at the RC Manubhai 7s tournament that ended yesterday at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori.
“This is a village-based team, these kids have the talent to play rugby, so we’ve given them this opportunity to showcase through the club. We reached the cup semi-final of the U19 division, and we are thankful to God for bringing us here. This is a new feat for us and reaching the semi-final was something we weren’t expecting.”
Vatukoro now sets its sight on the Fiji Bitter Savusavu 7s scheduled for January 16-18.
