RUGBY has always been a passion for 19-year-old Vasiti Vuniwai Turagavou of the Dartmouth rugby team from the USA competing at the 50th Fiji Bitter Marist 7s tournament.

Originally hailing from Cakaudrove in Vanualevu, she feels blessed to have the opportunity to compete in her home country at the prestigious 50th Fiji Bitter Marist 7s tournament.

Having made her second trip to Fiji, Vasiti is thrilled to test her skills against some of the top teams in the competition.

The Dartmouth rugby team had a solid start in their pool matches, with a draw 19-19 against Ezers Womens team and a victory against Marist Womens 24-5.

Turagavou recognises the tough competition but remains optimistic about their performance.

“Coming back to the country is just a blessing and getting to know my culture more, and have time to meet some of my family,” said Turagavou.

“Competition is tough, we had a great two games, we don’t know what to expect in the competition, there is a lot of good teams, also most of our players this will be the first time here in Fiji, so far so good.”

Turagavou credits her father for instilling in her a love for the sport.

“Starting my rugby career at a young age, and with my dad who is from a country that’s passionate and talented in the sport, I knew one day i will take up the sport.”

Despite not being able to come with her father this year, Turagavou is grateful to have her grandparents cheering her on from the stands.

Reflecting on the significance of returning to her home country, Turagavou expresses gratitude for the opportunity to reconnect with her culture and family.

She is determined to make the most of her time in Fiji and showcase her skills on the rugby field.
