The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) General Assembly yesterday focused on key issues affecting rugby unions and the future direction of the sport.

Chairman John Sanday said the gathering was an important platform to listen, share, and plan for the growth of rugby in Fiji and beyond.

“It’s one where we’ve come to listen and come to hear the voice about rugby unions, so we can then take that back in and build it into our future plans,” Sanday said.

The assembly also provided an opportunity for the union to present its vision for taking rugby into the global arena.

“But there was also an opportunity for us to share what we work we’re doing in terms of where we want to take rugby into the global arena, how we want to improve our domestic competition. And so it’s been exciting, the sense that interaction and the exchange of ideas has been really vibrant, exciting, and it’s actually quite inspiring for us. It’s going to help us, and it’s going to shape a very exciting, very good 2026 season, that will translate back into the investment into the Union,” he said.

Feedback from members has been positive.

“Everybody’s happy there. What my philosophy is that, I want my members to know, so there’s no mis-information here, but as long as they know what you know, what we’re working on, so that we’re all on the same page and we are all on this journey together, we’re one big family,” he explained. Sanday added that the main goal of the assembly was to ensure members were aware of the union’s work over the past year and felt included in its developments.

“So that’s been my key outcome. My aim was just to make sure that when they leave all the work that we’ve done throughout the year and all the meetings we’ve had and all the developments they can become aware of it and they’re part of it,” he said.
