Jeremiah Rova, Captain of Swami Vivekananda College swimmimg team, produced an outstanding performance in the boys 200m butterfly final, securing the gold medal yesterday afternoon as the finals came to an end at the National Age Group Championships.

The result marked a significant achievement for Rova, who identified the race as one of his primary goals for the competition.

Rova also demonstrated commendable sportsmanship during the meet when he assisted a fellow competitor who experienced muscle cramps on the final lap of the race.

The swimmer had to stop due to severe discomfort, and Rova intervened to ensure his safety by assisting him out of the pool.

Reflecting on the broader significance of the meet, Rova highlighted the importance of camaraderie alongside competition.

“At the end of the day, it’s a race, but you’re also gaining friendships out of this,” he said.

Regarding the incident in the pool, he explained, “I think he had a bad cramp on his leg, so I had to get and stretch his leg and pull him out the pool.”

Despite the interruption to his own competitive focus, Rova expressed satisfaction with his performance in the 200m butterfly final.

“It felt good. I don’t think there’s anything to improve on. Probably just fitness to get my times to drop. I was focusing more on this race,” Rova stated.

In preparation to the event, Rova opted to withdraw from a relace race in order to fully concentrate on his individual performance.

“I pulled out of the relay to focus on this, so I’m happy I got the result,” he added.

Looking ahead, Rova hopes his actions in competition and in assisting fellow athletes serve as an example for younger swimmers.

He emphasised the values of unity and mutual respect within the sport.

“I think that’s the whole purpose of this meet, just to to not only swim, but to find unity in every other swimmer here in the Pacific and around the country.”
