The Sabeto Roosters has received a timely boost with the family of the late Ratu Peniasi Varo Nalukuya from Saunaka giving a new set of uniforms marking Pinktober by creating breast cancer awareness.
The Roosters will don the pink and white uniform when they take on the Ravoravo Rabbitohs in the top of the table Vodafone Cup Western State Maroons round eight clash at Prince Charles Park this afternoon.
The late Ratu Peniasi was the former president of the Nadi Rugby Union and also a former Nadi player. His elder brother the late Ratu Josateki Sovau represented the Flying Fijians from 1970-1979 and was the coach of the Flying Fijians at the inaugural Rugby World Cup co-hosted by New Zealand and Australia in 1987.
Ratu Josateki Nalukuya, who is the son of the late Peniasi and the namesake of Sovau, presented the uniforms to the Roosters.
He said they had a long history between the vanua o Saunaka and vanua o Sabeto through their blood ties.
Ratu Josateki said the uniform was unique and the gift was timely as they supported breast cancer awareness.
“We have come in to support the team during this COVID-19 pandemic,” he said.
“This donation is just to honour that traditional relationship between the two villages.
“We wish to help develop rugby league from the grassroots level as well and are supporting breast cancer awareness.
“We have also been helping the team financially for its weekly expenses for training and travelling.
“This gift is from the Peniasi Varo Nalukuya family.”
The Roosters will take on the Rabbitohs at 3.20pm.
