PLAYING our first rugby league game was a great feeling to the players and an eye-opener for most of the girls.
This is according to Navuga Kunakata, 23, of Bemana after playing her first rugby league game against Coastline Roos at Sigatoka Village ground yesterday.
Despite losing the battle 28-6, Kunakata and her teammates were satisfied with their efforts.
She said the game had opened a new window of opportunity for the girls and at the same time inspired them to reach the pinnacle of the sport.
“We are glad to be the first women’s team to play rugby league in Fiji,” said Kunakata.
“It was a great feeling and I just loved every minute of the game.
“This is to show the world that Fijian women can also play rugby league and we believe this is the beginnings of the women competition in Fiji.”
Kunakata said the game had taught them the significance of team play and comradeship.
“It’s a team sport and we need to work together to help the team do well,” KUnakata said.
“Even though we lost, we are satisfied we have given our best.
“We will go back, regroup and work on our mistakes before competing at our next game,” she added.
Bemana team comprised village women, school leavers and students.
