Ronav crowned national speedcubing champion

FIFTEEN- year-old Soham Ronav is the new national speedcubing champion.

The Nausori lad was crowned national champion at the Inaugural Fiji Nationals 2025 Rubik’s Competition which was held at Tokatoka Resort on Sunday.

Soham’s dedication paid off as he swept the board, winning all six events contested at the historic official World Cube Association (WCA) event held at Tokatoka Resort in Nadi.

The exciting finals saw Vincent Huang from Suva take the second-place title, while Penaia Ratumaitavuki from Nadi claimed third, marking a triumphant start for organized speedcubing in the island nation.

The Rubik’s Cube, which first came on the market in 1980, has sold over 400 million puzzles worldwide. The competitive side of the sport speedcubing is overseen globally by the World Cube Association (WCA), founded in 2004.

The Fiji Nationals was Fiji’s first official WCA event, organized with the assistance of WCA delegates Ron van Bruchem from The Netherlands and Peter Hugosson-Miller from Sweden.

The event drew 44 participants from nine different countries, including Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, and several European nations. However, only Fiji participants were eligible to win the national titles, keeping the focus firmly on developing local talent. Competitors ranged from the youngest at just 10 years old to the oldest at 62.

The competition format allowed participants to compete across six different events, with winners determined by the average time across five attempts. Rubik’s Cube (3x3x3), 2x2x2 Cube,4x4x4 Cube,Pyraminx, Skewb and Rubik’s Cube One-handed

The local Fijian cubers performed exceptionally well, making it into all the event finals and coming close to the international podiums.
