The Land Transport Authority (LTA) will take bus drivers to task if they continue to risk the safety of passengers by using electronic devices such as cell phones while behind the wheels.
With the rising chorus of concerns raised by members of the public regarding the careless driving habits of bus drivers, LTA acting CEO Irimaia Rokosawa said some drivers were disregarding guidelines prohibiting the use of mobile communication devices while driving, as well as the mandatory adoption of a cashless system for fare transactions.
Complaints received by LTA from members of the public in its official complaint platform will be registered where officers will then be assigned to carry out investigations on the claims.
“If they find that the offence has taken place, taking into consideration evidence captured by the public, Traffic Infringement Notices (TINs) are issued accordingly,” he said.
“The fine for improper use of mobile communication is $100.
“The payment of cash to bus drivers for any fare is illegal and will result in the issuance of TINs and a penalty of $150 to the driver of the bus and the passenger who has paid the cash.
“As a further deterrent measure, bus drivers found in violation of these road safety rules and regulations would be called in for show cause.”
