Former assistant minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Veena Bhatnagar has declined the offer by the Electoral Commission to take up a vacant seat in Parliament.

Consequently, a decision by the Electoral Commission on July 25 has seen the vacant seat being awarded to Taito Rokomatu, who is next on the list after Mrs Bhatnagar.

“As per Section 64 (1) of the 2013 Constitution of the Republic of Fiji, Taito Rokomatu, candidate number 181, having secured 489 votes in the 2022 General Election, is the highest ranked out of the candidates of the FijiFirst who did not get elected to Parliament but is still available to serve,” stated the Electoral Commission.

“The Electoral Commission approves the awarding of the vacant parliamentary seat to Mr Taito Rokomatu.”

Mr Rokomatu is expected to take his administration of oath in the September sitting of Parliament.
