More than 70 players gathered at the Fiji FA Academy in Vatuwaqa for the Digicel Fiji U20 boys team trials for the Southern Zone on Thursday.

The purpose of the two-day trials was to select players for the OFC U19 Men’s Championship, which will be held in Samoa from July 7-20.

National coach Marika Rodu expressed his expectations for the trials, stating that they will be conducting trials in the Southern zone from Navua to Tailevu.

He emphasised the importance of identifying the best players for the final camp by observing players in the national league, U19 players, and youth league games.

“The open trials were an opportunity for players who may not be in the league to showcase their skills and talent,” said Rodu.

“We are looking for quality players as we will move around next week to the Western Division and later to Northern zone, so expecting to find some exceptional talents.”

Rodu says overseas players are also allowed to participate in the trials, but they must have Fijian citizenship and a Fijian passport to join the final camp in June.

Despite previous weeks of rainy weather, the coach was optimistic about the good weather for the two days of trials.
