Tailevu’s run in the Skipper Cup 2025 may have ended with their 26-31 semi-final loss to Naitasiri last Saturday, however, its president Joseph Rodan says the unwavering support of their loved ones helped drove them this far.
Rodan, in a press release on the union’s official page on social media platform Facebook (Meta), shared those sentiments when conveying his appreciation for the team’s valiant performance in the match.
“Behind every player and official is a family that gives strength and encouragement,” Rodan said.
“We thank them sincerely for standing by our team. The success we have achieved this season reflects their love and support.”
Unlike their opponents who fielded experienced players such as captain Jone Naqiri and French rugby sensation Virimi Vakatawa for instance, Tailevu fielded a largely younger team and Rodan highlighted these were “homegrown talents from village and club competitions.”
“Our goal remains clear, to develop our club players into provincial representatives and future Fiji Rugby stars.
“The journey is challenging, but with hard work and unity, we are confident of success.”
As these players helped take Tailevu from a quarter-final exit in last year’s competition when they lost 28-41 to Naitasiri, to reaching the semi-finals against the same with a young senior men’s team this season, the onus was on developing more young players.
“We are focused on sustainability, not just winning matches, but developing a system that provides for our young players to grow, gain exposure and represent Tailevu and Fiji in the years ahead,” Rodan added.
