VILLAGERS of three districts in the Ra highlands are concerned about the state of roads and the challenges they pose for commuters.
Nasau district representative Meli Tokalau said complaints had fallen on deaf ears.
Mr Tokalau said landslips on both sides of a small stretch leading to the Nasau district health centre was a major worry.
“This road is used by three districts and we’ve been raising the landslips issue for the past four years,” he said.
“They’ve just recently come to work on it, but it’s still a risk during rainy weather because there’s nothing on either side of the road to prevent further landslip.”
Mr Tokalau said three cars had veered off the road into the ditch along the stretch to Nubumakita Village.
“I will continue to raise this because people’s lives are at risk,” he said. “I don’t know what else we can say to make them see that this is a hazard.
“It almost seems like work will only commence when someone dies or injured. We hope the safety of the people is considered.
“Three districts use the Nasau district hospital. This means more than 3000 people commute here on a regular basis.”
Mr Tokalau said promises to construct a proper crossing from Savusavu settlement were yet to be fulfilled.
“We were informed in the last provincial meeting that there was budget for it. It’s December and there’s still no word. What we are concerned about is the weather. It’s now starting to rain and the bridge washing away will again affect movement,” he said.
Roko Tui Ra Mosese Nakoroi said contactors Higgins would check the road before they confirmed what can be done.
