THE Ratu Kadavulevu School under-18 side is keen to do well at the Sanix World Rugby Youth Invitational Tournament which kicks off in Japan this weekend. RKS secured an invitation to the event after winning the U17 grade during the Deans Trophy competition last year. The side defeated Queen Victoria School 16-13 in the final. RKS team manager Osea Uluiviti said going to Japan for this tournament was a boost for their Deans Trophy campaign this year. Uluiviti said they would be showcasing their brand of rugby in the tournament
“We won the U17 Deans Trophy last year and these boys are now in the U18 grade,” he said. “So we have been given this opportunity to play other schools from South Africa, England, New Zealand and Australia in Japan. “We are lucky that we are going to play this year. Teams from Fiji haven’t won this tournament before so we are going to give our best.”
RKS was placed third in the 2002 edition of the Sanix World Rugby Youth Invitational Tournament.
“The boys have been going through normal training,” Uluiviti said. “We are preparing for the Deans Trophy and going to Japan is a big bonus for the boys. “We will showcase our brand of rugby that we normally play. There are some new inclusions in the team who have come up from the U16 grade to play in the U18 grade. “It will be a tough tournament. QVS has gone to the tournament but has never won.”
The Sanix World Rugby Youth Tournament is classed as the pinnacle for schoolboy rugby with the champions being considered the strongest school-age rugby team in the world.
