A BLEND of fresh talent and experienced campaigners will take centre stage when the Fijiana XV take on Tonga in the Oceania Rugby Women’s XV Championship at Churchill Park tomorrow.

Interim head coach Mike Legge admits preparations were far from ideal, with last week’s cyclone disrupting training schedules and access to facilities.

However, he says the side has shown resilience to regroup and refocus ahead of the crucial encounter.

“We had a lot of distractions last week in the aftermath of the cyclone, with facility closures, but we came in on Saturday and have been able to train ever since.

“It’s been OK, and it can only get better from here,” Legge said.

Despite the setback, the coaching staff has used the opportunity to further strengthen depth within the squad, naming a number of new players who are set to make their mark on the international stage.

Legge highlighted that the inclusion of emerging talent from local competitions was part of a wider development pathway for women’s rugby in Fiji.

“Giving a pathway to our Marama players, our Fijiana squad features 12 players from the Marama Cup alongside our regular Fijiana XV players,” he said.

“It’s massive for our development and you will see a few debuts against Tonga.”

The mix of youth and experience is expected to play a key role as the side looks to build continuity and long-term strength.

Heading into the match, Legge is anticipating a tough and physical contest from the Tongans, but remains confident in his team’s preparation and mindset.

“It’s important for us to maintain momentum from the Wallaroos match.

“We expect a physical game from Tonga, and for us it’s about continuing our processes and sticking to what we believe will give us the win.”

With kickoff set for 4.30pm, fans can expect a determined Fijiana side eager to overcome recent challenges and make a strong statement on home soil.
