Rinesh Sharma questions trade fallout from Israel ties — Deputy PM Kamikamica offers private briefing

Opposition MP Rinesh Sharma has raised concerns in Parliament about potential economic repercussions for Fiji over its growing diplomatic ties, particularly in light of global geopolitical tensions.

Speaking during the parliamentary session, Sharma posed a direct question on whether Fiji could face trade sanctions or other economic implications as a result of the bilateral partnerships it is forming, including with Israel.

“The people are asking: will Fiji see economic implications on trade in the future because of the partnerships and foreign policies we are building? Geopolitics is at play, Mr Speaker, sir, and people are picking sides,” Sharma said.

Although the question was ruled by the Speaker to fall outside the scope of the scheduled line of inquiry, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade Manoa Kamikamica briefly responded.

“It probably shouldn’t warrant an answer because it’s outside the spirit of the first question,” Kamikamica said.

“But I’m happy to sit down privately with the honourable member and explain Fiji’s position.”

Fiji’s strengthening ties with Israel in recent years have drawn mixed responses at home and abroad, with civil society groups and some political voices urging caution over alignment in ongoing global conflicts.
