Rigid and irrelevant curriculum is forcing boys to leave school early, states a new report released by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

The report titled “Boys’ disengagement from education – Fiji case study” was authored by Dr Wahab Ali, associate professor and head of education department at the University of Fiji.

“An effective curriculum provides teachers, students, administrators and community stakeholders with a measurable plan and structure for delivering a quality education,” the report stated.

“This study found that teachers could usefully be consulted, and awareness could be raised during curriculum development and implementation periods to ensure a less rigid program and more engaging content.

“There is a lack of understanding of students’ expectations, and around how the use of information and communications technology (ICT) can make materials more engaging and meaningful.

“Parents also raised concerns about the content of certain curriculum areas that should be reviewed to make them more relevant and meaningful to the students.”

The report also stated there should be more awareness and consultation at the drafting and trial stages.

“When curriculum developers, teachers and parents support learning, children are inclined to succeed not just in school, but throughout life.

“Participation of parents and families is critical not only in the very beginning of the educational process, but throughout a child’s entire academic career.”
