THE High Court in Suva has allowed the Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission to assess murder accused Epeli Laqeni’s living conditions at the remand centre.
Justice Usaia Ratuvili granted two applications from the defence, allowing the commission to interview Mr Laqeni, who is currently wheelchair-bound.
The court also granted an order for Mr Laqeni to undergo a medical examination, with a full medical report to be furnished to the court.
He is charged with one count of murder allegedly committed between September 3 and 5 last year at Nakasi, Nausori.
Meanwhile, prosecutor Naazish Ali informed the court that police are yet to begin the extraction of information from the mobile phones belonging to both the victim and the accused.
In response, defence lawyer Timoci Varinava also sought the victim’s call records for September 2025.
Mr Laqeni has been further remanded in custody, with the matter adjourned to January 20.
