TRIBUTES on the late former President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau’s ability to lift spirits through song and storytelling were shared yesterday, highlighting his rare gift for bridging social divides.

Speaking on behalf of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces as it presented their i-reguregu to the vanua o Kubuna, Brigadier General Manoa Gadai reflected on the character of a leader who moved effortlessly between authority and approachability.

He said he was a leader who carried the dignity of high office while remaining deeply connected to ordinary Fijians.

The RFMF delegation was led by Commander Ro Jone Kalouniwai.

“The qualities of the late Commander-in-Chief are the qualities we strive for in Delainabua,” Brig. Gen Gadai said.

He recounted how the late leader’s presence among the troops often brought moments of unity and joy, marked by song and shared experiences.

“When he was amongst us, we would be singing Ko Bau Na Yanuyanu, E ra sulu kaki mai and Sisili mai Wainadoi, or laughing as he shared stories from the Middle East.”

He said those moments reflected a man who remained grounded despite his rank, embodying both noble leadership and humility.

“It saddens us that the late Na Turaga na Taukei Naisogolaca has left us.”

Ratu Epeli served as Commander of the Royal Fiji Military Forces from 1982 to 1987 and President from 2009 to 2015, marking a distinguished career in both military and national leadership.
